Essay: Why Practice Risk Communication?

WORK CULTURE CHANGE

Meme - an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.

Memes are the currency of an organization's culture; the culture of a profession; the "SOUP" whose taste is indistiguishable from all the individual contributions of which it is comprised. Getting a "taste" of a culture, or making it "taste differently" to folks internal or external is the practice of Cultural Effect Consulting.

A work culture may exist to serve the mission or business goals of an organization - in fact, that's when it works best.

A work culture may also be at odds with the business or stated interests of the organization. Understanding the values and behaviors in the cultural context is paramount in supporting any interpersonal actions, learning, or progress.

Understanding how governance, decisions, communication methods are fundamental to the performance of the organization.

"How Can Nuclear Power be Green?"

An open ended, hopeful question to spur reflection and dialogue in a new way. Our concern is that earnest explorations of this question are rare - and that it would be valuable for all parties to consider that this question is best answered as a vision.

For anyone who believes they have the emphatic and correct answer to that question, consider:

"Green" is a goal, not a stamp of approval;

The process of progress requires some uncertainty;

My hope that authentic critique can be used to improve the system, not as a referendum.

"No country, however rich, can afford the waste of its human resources."

- Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"No company, however rich, can afford the waste or misuse of people's time and energy."

- Mark Radonich's paraphrase of FDR, applied to the current business economy

The Culture:

The interactions, characteristics, and current norms of the group working towards a goal, decision, or desired outcome.

The Effect:

An intentional effort to address and positively change the norms.
